“Of Being and Doing” exhibition at Random Room by Mexican Fashion Designer Carmen Rion

More than 10 years ago I had the opportunity to interview Mexican Fashion Designer Carmen Rion, backstage of her runway show presented at Google +Fashion second edition. While I was developing this new blog over in the pandemic I knew I wanted to talk about her and interview her again.

A few days ago I noticed she was having an exhibition at the “Random Room Gallery” about her trajectory in fashion. I knew I wanted to go, She was also having a Doll Workshop that seemed very interesting. You will get to see the most significant designs from Carmen’s Collections (Basicos, Colección, Transformer, Reciclado, Tejido, Bordado, Scully + Rion, Bolom, Flores, Rayas).

Being is intrinsic, from the moment we are born, but it is the doing that shapes us, like clay in the hands of a potter. It makes us masters or experts, or perhaps nothing more than mere enjoyers of what we love: our craft. The true delight in all this lies in the pleasure of learning to sew and assemble, to create and enjoy, even if it makes us appear “famous.” The grace, I believe, is in the way we do what has been one of humanity’s earliest crafts. We are muleteers, and we walk the path; that is Being and Doing.

These are a few images of the doll workshop which I had the honor to attend! Thank you very much to Random Room Gallery staff for having me, and special thank you to Carmen for sharing her life story and guide us through this amazing workshop.

Each attendant developed and crafted their own doll, using left overs of fabric from Carmen’s collections and up cycle.

The exhibition will be available till the 20 of August! Can’t miss it.
