Cafécore: Behind the Pinterest trend of showing still life in coffee trays as a media of visual storytelling

I was longing to write about this trend I’ve been spotting on social media—what’s behind it and why people are showing still life in a coffee tray as a medium of visual storytelling. At first, I saw these pictures and thought to myself that they look very aesthetic, and it’s interesting how people take their coffee differently and share their way of life through still life portraits on pick-up cardboard coffee trays on the street. What is the common denominator?

Visual Storytelling: I wonder who these people are, what they do for a living, and I secretly want some of the products they display—such as Aesop hand cream (not available in my country), or the latest Rhode gloss and blush tint. And how do they order their coffee—lattes or something else? Trays serve as mini stages for fashion or beauty photography and styling.

Generational Shift: Gen Z favors health-conscious, functional setups over millennials’ alcohol-oriented décor.

DIY & Affordability: Cardboard is cheap, customizable, and perfectly fits the “Pinterest DIY” ethos.

Organization & Focus: It helps group items visually and creates tidy, appealing still lifes.

3 Examples I’ve seen on www.pinterest.com.mx

My take on it..

I chose Benefit’s Willa mini blush, Tim Horton’s Vanilla Latte and timbits, Caudalié’s Eau de Raisin, and Phytorelax COCO hand cream, and Gucci sun glasses.

Next time you see a cardboard coffee tray filled with lipsticks, jewelry, or skincare, it’s more than whimsy—it’s part of a broader design language blending café vibes, sustainability, and personal style.
